is happening in northe virginia on roads. >> water main break at tysons corner. sarah simmons is live. >> reporter: it's a 20-inch water main break. this happened at about 3:00 this morning. the water is shut off. and you can see the massive crater left behind. this is 123 norbound between international drive and the beltway. at this point theyare still trying to figure out if the road is safe. they are hoping they can get one lane open on the northbound side, otherwise this will be a while. the road has buckled. they say it could be eight pl hours or maybe even all day or possibly more to get the road fixed and driveable once again. v-dot is telling us this was due to a construction crew overnight that was working here on a hot lane project and they were boring underneath the surface to install piping for the project and that is when the break occurred. now falls church water authority have been out here as well. they shut off the water and are saying there are a few outages and mostly in tysons corner. you might have water but at a low pressure. it will be a traffic nightmare. 123 s

to follow that deadly mine explosion in west virginia this morning. it is a quiet and serene scene now. but that is only a cover for the grief and sadness in this small community. >> 25 miners were killed and four still missing after yesterday's explosion in montcoal, west virginia but the rescue effort is on hold as crews work to ventilate toxic gas from the mine. will thomas is in montcoal with the latest now. >> reporter: good morning. the rescue effort continues. there are still four miners unaccounted for inside and trapped. rescuers were pulled out overnight because there is such a strong buildup of carbon monoxide, it is simply too dangerous. so they are digging three giant holes to vent out the area and about 1100 feet below where they believe the miners are at. they're going to try and let some fumes out so send rescuers back inside. the west virginia governor is with virginia families and saying the families are not giving up hope. >> they don't expect to have that completed until sometime this evening andwe can't risk the recovery or search and rescue until we know it's safe

search for four missing miners in west virginia. >> they are still holding out hope that the workers escaped the explosion and made it to an airtight chamber with extra oxygen and water. but the search continues this morning. let's get back to west virginia where will thomas has the latest for us. >> reporter: steve and allison, good morning. real progress this morning. about 4:55 a.m. rescuers reentered the mine to get to where the four miners are believed to be. they are advancing on a man trip and rail car and they will go 75% of the way. it is a five mile trek from the point of entry. some will be on foot. conditions will determine how quickly they can move forward. the 32 rescuers are using oxygen tanks but if the air quality becomes dangerous, meaning ideal for another explosion, they'll have to pull back or stop advancing. now this is a rescue effort so all of the rescuers are focused on trying to find the four missing miners. >> right now we're in the full rescue. rescue is basically that we have four unaccounted for. we want to make sure we are able to locate and hopefully b

been digging throughout the night to try to release toxic gases at the mine in west virginia where 25 mines are died in an explosion on monday. in the meantime, the search continues for the four miners who are still missing. >> fox 5's will thomas has been out at the upper big branch mine in montcoal all morning long watching the latest developments. will johns us now with new details. what is going on? >> good morning to you. we just received an update a short time ago from governor manchin and the administration for coal mine safety and health. there has been significant progress overnight. some good news to report. instead of focusing on just two holes where they're trying to ventilate the area where the men are believed to be, the four missing miners, they are now efforting a total of four and one of those holes has already penetrated this area. they are concentrating specifically on a 20 by 1,000- foot area where the four missing miners are believed to be. methane lefts are too high for rest users to reenter so they are veptding out the area society rescue teams can access the me

to reach four miners trapped underground in west virginia. 25 miners died at the explosion in west virginia. now crews are cleaning -- clinging to hope the remaining miners have survived. >> their families are facing a harrowing ordeal waiting to hear word on their loved ones. will, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. crews are now focused on drilling these ventilation holes to get rid of this methane that's built up so they can get rescuers back inside the mine and get to these four missing miners. they're digging about a thousand feet deep, a total of four holes and they're concentrating on an area that's about 20 feet wide by about a thousand feet long. officials tell us there is a chamber in this general area and if one or more of these missing miners were able to make it inside of this chamber and seal themselves off they could sur five for four days. >> the worst thing in the world we could do now is put rescue teams in harm's way. the bravest people in the world and the hardest working. but so, yeah, we want to make sure that they don't get themselves in a situation to wh

through a coal mine in west virginia in their desperate search for signs of life. they're hoping find four missing miners. >> they know the chances are slim but crews are not ready to give up. will thomas is live in montcoal with the latest. will, good morning. >> reporter: tony and allison, good morning to you. it is about getting to the missing miners as quickly as possible and yet keeping the miners safe. the four teams, eight people each went down. they were forced out on tuesday because of high levels of methane and carbon monoxide. that's when they drilled multiple bore holes to ventilate the area where the miners are believed to be. hole one penetrated yesterday and overnight air levels were deemed safe enough. they are making the trek on rail cart called a man trip but the rescuers will have to walk the final mile and a half. >> right now we're in the full rescue. rescue is basically that we have four unaccounted for. we want to make sure that we're able to locate and hopefully by some miracle and a sliver of the hope that we have, we find somebody. and we do know that our only cha

at the west virginia coal mine could have been prevented. investigators say last week's explosion at the upper big branch mine may have been the result of a build up of methane gas mixing with coal dust and the mine saw a major spike in safety violations. 29 miners were killed in the explosion. president obama is now urging con res to -- congress to strengthen mine safety laws to make sure this doesn't happen again. governor joe manchin issued an executive order to halt operations today to honor those who died. >>> and today is the third anniversary of the massacre at virginia tech. today students, staff and members of the community will hold a candle lit ceremony as the blacksburg, virginia, campus where a memorial has been erected to honor the victims. >>> apparently there was outrage in the bush administration showing a terror suspect being water boarded. back in 2005 the c.i.a. director agreed to destroy the videos. apparently white house counsel harriet miers was extremely angry to find out about it. place are investigating whether any crime was committed. >>> well a local school district

virginia to search for mauer missing miners, they have been forced out once again. >> they were five miles into the mine when they smelled smoke indicating there was a fire somewhere in the mine. it's possible that could trigger another explosion like the one that killed 25 miners on monday. still some progress was made as the west virginia governor announced this morning. >> one cham ber has been checked, the chamber by the -- by our -- right here. it was not deployed and in tact and not deployed so we know there was nobody in that chamber. so we had one more chamber left to check. >> when they broke the plain and went into the four connecting entries, we have smoke in all four entries and the smoke is traveling from this side toward the long wall face indicating that we have a fire somewhere. >> meantime we're learning more about the safety of the upper big branch mine. federal regulators issued evacuation orders for all or parts of the mine more than 60 times sin the start of 2009. that's according to a report prepared for west virginia senator robert burg. >>> this morning police need

. and it occurred in virginia along northbound i-95 as you approach the prince william parkway. eight-car pileup is tieing up our commute. we have three vehicles here and four here in the middle and another vehicle just out of camera range. it spun around and facing the wrong direction. you need to know that northbound 95, the main line is blocked here at the prince william parkway. for a while they were allowing traffic to use the service road to squeeze by. now v-dot tells me they have listed the h.o.v. rules on 95 to alleviate the tieups out of stafford and through dumfries toward newington and springfield. but if you commit do the h.o.v. lanes out of woodbridge, you can't exit into the main line until you reach newington so that is tricky. do make note of that. again the service roadway, single file to the right will get you through and the h.o.v. lanes and restrictions have been lifted. but again, you cannot make your exit back into the main lie until you reach the fly over at 7100 out toward the tank farm. at least five injured in the incident and the main lines of the 95 are closed. and o
